Most people get back or neck problems from time to time, but more than 95% of people who see their doctor about a back problem don’t need an operation. Our consultants will fully assess you, get any imaging or other tests you might need, take you through the results, and discuss treatment options with you.
We have a special “Spine London method” for all our patients.
First of all, we’ll take your history – asking you detailed questions about the problem you have now, about your medical history, any other medical problems you might have, medications you’re taking and any treatments you’ve had so far. We’ll then examine you and, if possible at that stage, we’ll tell you what we think the problem might be.
After we’ve seen and examined you, we may ask you to have some tests, most likely imaging studies. Unless you have a contraindication to MRI scans, such as a pacemaker, you’ll have an MRI scan of your spine, possibly also with a CT scan or a SPECT-CT scan. CT scans show the structure of your bones very well, in ways an MRI scan can’t. And a SPECT-CT scan combines a CT scan with an isotope bone scan, which will give extra information about wear and tear, or any inflammation in your spine. Other tests we commonly use to investigate spinal and nerve problems are special blood tests, bone density scans, and neurophysiology tests to see how your nerves are functioning.
Once you’ve had your tests, we’ll see you again to take you through the findings. We’ll tell you what the tests have shown and the likely cause of your problem.
Once we’ve taken you through your tests, we’ll take you through the treatment options for your problem, telling you about the risks and benefits of each.
Once we’ve discussed your test results and treatment options with you, we’ll help you choose the treatment option that works best for you and arrange for you to have it. If you need to see a different specialist, we’ll help you choose the right one for you who can give you the treatment you want, when and where you want it.
Once you’ve decided the treatment you want to have, we’ll make sure you see the spine or nerve specialist you want to see and have the treatment you want at a time and place that works for you.
If you’re having a course of treatment, we’ll stay in close contact with you throughout. If you’re have an interventional treatment or surgery, we’ll follow you up from the moment you’ve had it. You’ll be able to contact us at any time during and after your treatment. Once you’ve been a Spine London patient, you’re always a Spine London patient. You can come straight back to us at any time – even years later.
We collect outcome and satisfaction data on all our patients, so we can continue to make sure we offer the best treatments from the best specialists.
Hopefully you won’t get a spine or nerve problem again, but if you do, you can contact us at any time, no matter how long after you’ve first seen us.
We are at the cutting edge of treatments for spine and nerve problems, and our consultants are helping to develop new ones. If you’d like to learn about new treatments, or if there’s an experimental treatment you’d like to consider please contact us.

If you’ve already seen someone about your spinal or neurological problem and there’s something you’re not sure about, we can arrange for you to see one of our consultants so you can have a second opinion. We also run MDTs, which are where our consultants and other specialists get together to discuss complex cases.
We run multidisciplinary team meetings (MDTs), which is where a number of Spine London preferred consultants and other specialists meet to discuss patients with complex problems, so they can come to a consensus view on the best way to manage them. If you would like to have your case discussed at one of our MDTs please contact us.
